Seminars & Retreats
I am available to speak to your group, Sunday school class, or church on a variety of topics relating to faith and mental health. I also offer one-day or weekend retreats. Below is a sample of what I can speak on, and I am also open to discussing what I might be able to bring to address the unique needs of your group.
Beyond Bubble Baths—A New Look at Self-Care
Social media often gives the impression that the way to take care of ourselves is as simple as scheduling some “me time” to enjoy bath salts or your favorite latte. While these small indulgences can connect us with joy and the present moment, they are only a minor part of what it means to actually prioritize self-care. During this retreat, we will take a deep dive into what it truly means to take care of yourself. Lisa will share numerous aspects of self-care, and you will have the opportunity to reflect, dialogue with others, practice, and create a plan for next steps.
When the Road Stops—Working through a Crisis of Faith
Life is humming along and then takes an unexpected turn—illness, death, divorce, job loss, depression, or any other happening that ends life as you knew it. Frequently, such an occurrence brings both emotional upheaval and a questioning of faith. Though deeply disturbing and filled with suffering, these difficulties can also be understood as part of the normal path of spiritual development and can even become portals into a new perspective on God, life, and faith. We’ll look at the role of upheaval in faith development and what can support you as you try to find your way.
Anxious Faith—Embracing Uncertainty
We are called to live by faith, and yet many people experience some degree of anxiety or worry and then feel guilty for it. We sometimes mistakenly assume that having faith means being certain and therefore is incompatible with worry, but faith is more akin to trust than certainty. We’ll look at using faith as a tool for living with uncertainty and the worry that it can sometimes generate.
Self-Care vs. Selfish—which one is it??
We are given so many messages about self-care and yet the Bible repeatedly calls us to self-sacrifice. How are we supposed to determine when to take care of ourselves and when it’s time to sacrifice? We’ll look at what we can learn from Jesus’ example, the kind of sacrifice that is meaningful and works for good, and the critical aspects of self-care.
